We are KATAPLIN
We are a Brooklyn based company dedicated to bringing unique designs and great quality, casual wear to all people who feel like a kid inside. We are a family owned and run company and specialize in hands on attitude toward our production as well as costumer service. Above all we are parents and artists and we are always open to suggestions so never hesitate to contact us.
Luciana Toyos, mom to Jan (4 + ½ y), the creator and designer of Kataplin says:
“I used to hand paint on tees for Jan while he was sleeping and when people around would ask me where did I get that tee or onecie, I would tell them we made them with my husband. I saw a need for this kind of stuff and we went for it.”
“So in the first abstract splashes of paint that got us going, these expressions formed into a caterpillar and here we came up with the name “kataplin the caterpillar ”
People loved it !! I still meet every now and then somebody wearing one of those tees, from the early days, each one hand painted and truly different from another and the parents still say “we love that shirt the most ”….”
“Now days, after following a journey of learning and growing, we design by exploring into kid’s world and their imagination. I came up with designs that found a very unique personality. “They are just different and colorful” these comments we constantly hear at our fairs….”
There is no before and after for Kataplin; there is always a continuation and a growing process in our company and with all of our designs. ‘Perro go play’ was the initial character of the group with the ‘go play’ idea, which hit the point with our public so well and made them grin and laugh; They loved it. “Its like being a kid again” said Jackie… and than came ‘monstruo’ and ‘hormiga’ and they all went to play with our parents and kids did too.
It is an integral part of our mission to keep a ‘childish attitude’, which means a lot of exploring and interacting with kids, learning from their magical minds. We strongly believe that by doing it this way - by attempting to give expression to a child’s mind we can bring forth some of that magic they can offer us, a change in attitude this world badly needs. We also assert that by PRODUCING EACH OF OUR SHIRTS WITH OUR HANDS, WE ARE CREATING CHANGE! Promoting sustainable local production of affordable and excellent quality products to our kids near and far – that is what we are striving to do; but our humble wish is to give children the experience of art.
KATAPLIN and now www.kataplin.com has grown rapidly in our production capacity, yet still remains vertically integrated. We design and produce all our apparel and we want to stay this way. All of our products are made of the same high quality fabric: 100 % cotton from American Apparel. Their unlimited color spectrum, coupled with our own unique ink colors gives us an unprecedented flexibility of design and capacity for one of the kindness of any given t-shirt. What’s better they are 100% made at our studio in Brooklyn. Everything from silkscreen to drying to folding and tagging and finally to the parent’s hands – it is all done by us and that is the way we want to keep it.
